Chapter Thirty-One [Video]
Okay, so continuing on from the previous video... [Insert a link here.] Well, things have changed quite a bit over the year from when that was made.
Just as a general sort of update here's a summary of what's included in this video and in the re-written pamphlet that we hand out to newcomers. In case you haven't watched it - and I suggest you do - my name is Lavi. We've had our first arrest and release thanks to General Cross, our first violent confrontation of a massive scale from Credinta, a series of temporary restorations of old buildings, and new additional spaces created within the apartment building. And searches for towns that might be on friendlier terms with us in the surrounding area have been taken in hand.
[Lavi shuffles on his feet a bit and tucks his hands behind his back, a nervous habit from reciting things from his youth.]
One of our Nesreca residents was caught by Credinta police forces while visiting the area and thrown into prison. His personal effects were taken and we were only made aware of his arrest by the police. And also made aware to us was the magical barrier keeping most of us with abilities out, so discovered by the General.
However the situation was resolved and the arrested was released safely back into Nesreca. Our journeys over there haven't gone unnoticed and the patrols of the Credinta police force have doubled their efforts to keep us out. It is not advisable for anyone to go into town without a partner or - most importantly - a safe and undiscovered pathway.
[A pause here to let the information sink in or to simply give himself a break.]
In July of 2001 soldiers from Credinta started making their way across the bridges into Nesreca on foot. They were aiming to rid their neighboring city of us once and for all, they were shooting to kill. In our efforts to protect ourselves and show that we meant no harm we did our best to refrain from killing their forces. Their last efforts before ceasing fire involved tanks and from personal experience it's not wise to take one of those on by yourself. [Cough cough.]
We did, however, temporarily take prisoners that were later released once the fighting came to a close and any negotiations for our safety and theirs was handled by Queen Elizabeth of England. Relations between us and Credinta remain strained so I'll repeat it again, do not attempt to go into Credinta alone or without a safe path. Knowing the language in its present form and the country's customs go a long way in securing your safety. As does proper clothing. But the best way to stay safe, alive, and here where we have a chance of going home is to leave it to those of us who have the ability to go in and out unseen.
[Another pause, another topic, another breath. It annoys him a little that he's been here this long.]
The following places have been temporarily restored and are now destroyed again, as usual with the same deep scars made from some large animal. Previously we've seen restorations to the amusement park, the market, several homes in the area. Since then the school, the mayor's residence, City Hall, the armory, library, recreational center, the churches, train stations, the graveyard, and hospital have all been restored and destroyed. We've taken as much as we can from areas like the armory, library, school, and hospital.
The apartment building we're now in was also restored and not destroyed. We're not sure why this is but it did temporarily revert to its previous state like the other buildings. As you can see it's restored once more to its original 1897 condition before the cataclysm. Most of the materials - guns and ammunition aside - are for the community and can be found in empty rooms on the first floor. If one of these rooms becomes given to you by Libitina then we'll move them to another location. We ask though that no one hog all of the blankets, pillows, or first-aid items. They're not yours, they're not ours, we're simply borrowing everything here until we go home.
[A smaller pause than the rest.]
Yours truly has started on various construction projects around the building to make it more livable while we're here. Awning is almost into place at this time, plans are to finish it before winter. Room 606 has been converted into a dining room with table and chairs for around two dozen. Room 604 is being repurposed into a kitchen, 203 has become an armory under the care and guardianship of Okumura Yukio, and the library is located in 904. It's also personal quarters, a knock would be courteous. I've also constructed a loom so that our lady Elizabeth can weave us blankets, if you need one or more please talk to her but remember not to tax the resources much.
[A grim sort of look now.] And our final update is this: I've taken the opportunity to search for neighboring cities that might be kinder to us than our direct neighbors and so far the result has been the same in all three directions that I've searched so far. North, south with Raven, and east with Okumura past Credinta have all turned up cities. Cities destroyed a few days after Nesreca in 1897, they've all befallen the same fate as our new residence has. Newspapers are barely a few days older or even days earlier, with no explanation for their destruction. Just speculations. I have one more trip to make to the west at a later date.
[One last pause, searching his mind to see if he's forgotten anything.]
I think that's it. Hopefully someone else will be taking care of this next time around. Or, even more optimistically, we'll all be gone from this place.
[He reaches to turn off the feed and then pauses.] Oh! Something else of note! [Grinning.] Wildlife has been popping up more and more recently, it's our hope to get some meat properly preserved and stored for winter. And the skins will sell well too. But please don't try to take on the wolves or bears by yourselves, I wouldn't even advise going after the moose herds either. Hunt with a partner or in a group!
