No, living your life for nothing is depressing. Deciding your own fate, and actively changing it is harrowing, but its certainly not depressing.

....I...don't know. If I didn't have a brother, I would've reported my mom to the police and gotten her arrested for what she does to me--they split siblings up if you report abusive parents. Uhm...then I guess I would've been put with a foster family... Then they'd've had some ideas about what I should do with my life, and I'd probably've listened to them....
